Custom Design at Partita
What is the custom design like at Partita?
Custom design is all about the experience and bringing to life an idea that speaks to you. We work with all types of materials, whether it’s a found object from the beach, or the finest of diamonds. We specialize in creating pieces that are not only one-of-a-kind, but also wearable. Our skilled team of goldsmiths and designers utilize a variety of traditional techniques like hand fabrication along with modern technologies to make your custom piece exceptional and timeless.
What is the process?
Our approach is very personal and unique to the individual(s) we’re working with. Often the project begins with an idea and/or a need. That might mean that a special piece is being created for someone as a gift, a custom engagement ring, or a symbolic piece of jewelry. Alternatively, someone may just walk in to our store and find inspiration in the moment to create something for themselves, or repurpose existing materials.
The beginning of a project can start off as an informal conversation and progress from there. We welcome interested parties to reach out over email, by phone, and/or to stop by our store in person.
With a custom design project, you will be working directly with Calvin Lee, Co-owner/Designer, to create and bring life to your vision. Calvin will sketch initial designs by hand, and include you in the process. Pictures and visual references are always helpful if you have them available.
When a customer wants to proceed with a project, we draft a detailed illustration with notes, along with a price quote for the project. A deposit is requested for half of the total amount. The remaining amount can be paid when the project is complete.
We like to give custom projects a turnaround timeframe of 4-6 weeks.
What if I already have materials I want to use?
That’s great! We are happy to work with existing materials. We often work with family stones, redesign existing pieces that are no longer functional, or create something entirely new using the existing materials that often times are also sentimental, but not worn in their current state.
How much does it cost to do a custom design piece?
It depends on the project itself and the materials being used. After we’ve determined the scope of work, we will provide you with a quote. We will ask you at the beginning of the process what your general budget is and work from there.
What are some recent projects you’ve worked on?
We just completed a one-of-kind ruby and diamond ring, set in platinum with a yellow gold band. It was stunning! The ring represented so much for the client and needed to be special. The original inspiration for the piece was a 1920s vintage diamond ring that our client had a photo of. The vintage aesthetic informed the overall design direction of the ring. We took the look to the next level by deciding to use a 3 carat ruby for the center stone, in lieu of a diamond. This made the look and played off of the gold band beautifully. Our client was thrilled with her piece and in disbelief that it was hers to wear.
What is your favorite part of the process?
The design challenge that some of the projects present, and the looks on customers’ faces when they see their completed piece for the first time. That is without a doubt the most rewarding part and the driver behind why we do what we do.
